Manzoni Barolo Cru 2013 - Santo Stefano, Roul, Big 'd Big

We’ve been seeing a constant, and consistent, rise in quality at Manzoni with each yearly visit, so, it wasn’t an actual ‘rabbit out of the hat’. Nevertheless, bar raised in spades, these are three totally stellar examples of the Nebbiolo grape, as good as anything we have ever experienced in Piemonte. Seriously!

These wines have a reputation for being serious, and we found ourselves in talks with a very serious retailer in London wanting a smartly packaged mix of Barolo. Lightbulb moment: owner Rodolfo Migliorini kindly agreed to have some six-packs assembled especially for the UK market, two bottles of each, and given the exposure his wines will be getting, he’s flicked us a cracking deal on these…

So what's in? 2 bottles of each:

  • 2013 Barolo, Big ‘d Big
The wonderfully named B ‘d B is blended from some of Manzoni’s finest plots that are situated around the winery itself. No shrinking violet, this was full, rich, and showy. Yes, even ‘big’. But then the tannins softened, it calmed down, and the finish was way more subtle than the initial attack had suggested. Brilliant. At this point, we thought “if this is so good, and we are now going to move up the scale…”. Drink from 2022 – 2035

  • 2013 Barolo, Vigna Cappella di S. Stefano
From the ‘Cru’ of Perno, as the grandest of their Cru-Barolo, usually tasted as the last of the three, but this time, before the Roul, below. A beguiling mélange of red fruits. This was faultless, complete, with a balance that simply shone at every step. Class, poise, breed, just everything. And elegance personified. Indeed, like all great wines, such was the finesse that one could almost drink NOW, but better to give it until 2023, allow potential to be fulfilled. It will still be batting in 2040!

  • 2013 Barolo, Vigna d’la Roul
From the ‘cru’ of Bricco San Pietro. It had an exceedingly tough act to follow, but there was an instant hit of juice, fresh and vibrant, quickly chased by some burly tannins, swirling, enveloping, but never overwhelming – all in perfect harmony. Certainly, a bit more heft than the Stefano, arguably making it a bit more of a ‘classic’ Barolo, with its significant weight. Might need the longest of the three, so corks to be pulled in 2024.
