This estate was acquired from Francesco Leanza in 2017 by Felix and Sabine Eichbauer. Wine-making style here follows a similar policy to that of Marino Colleoni at Santa Maria, but the wines could not be more different: less opulent, more aristocratic, and there are fabulous grainy tannins that, in claret terms, put one in mind of a top Pessac.
A born and bred Sicilian, Francesco abandoned his career as a chemist in 1990 to dedicate himself 100% to the Salicutti estate in Montalcino which he had purchased. He had strict rules about where the grapes from each of his 6 vineyards ended up, allocating them precisely to his 3 wines – Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Dopoteatro. At the time of sale in 2017, Francesco had 4ha under production and was proud to have been the first Montalcino producer to be certified organic in 1996.
